Ikat is an age-old, complex technique of patterning cloth, where the pattern is predetermined by tie-dyeing the yarn prior to weaving. The word ‘ikat’ derives from the Malay-Indonesian ‘mengikat’, meaning to tie or bind. The graphic fabric for our Lattice Ikat Cotton Gown has been hand woven, precisely tied and carefully hand-dyed by master weavers in southern India, where the technique has been passed down from one generation to the next. The characteristic haziness of the pattern is a pleasing result of this process.
